Schmid AG energy solutions and Mawera GmbH are merging. The new Schmid Mawera Group will be the European market leader for innovative and sustainable solutions in the field of biomass energy generation in the medium capacity segment.

Schmid AG energy solutions is setting the course for its long-term future: after around 90 years and three generations of ownership, the Schmid family has decided to hand over the company to three entrepreneurs from Vorarlberg: Wolfgang Rohner, Stefan Gritsch, and Günther Lehner. As part of this transaction, Schmid AG energy solutions will be merged with Mawera GmbH, which also belongs to the group of companies.

European market leader

The new group of companies will operate on the market under the name “Schmid Mawera Group” and will seamlessly continue the existing business of the two currently independent companies.

The merger will create the new European market leader for innovative and sustainable solutions in the field of biomass energy generation in the medium output segment. The new Schmid Mawera Group will generate sales of around CHF 180 million and employ 680 people. With this transaction, Schmid AG energy solutions is implementing a long-term, strategically sustainable succession solution and further strengthening its market presence through the merger with Mawera GmbH. For its part, Mawera GmbH is expanding its market share and, together with Schmid AG, benefiting from considerable synergy potential.

Continuity in management

The CEO of the new Schmid Mawera Group will be Philipp Lüscher, the current CEO of Schmid AG energy solutions. The new CFO will be Christian Huber, the current CFO of Schmid AG energy solutions. Lüscher and Huber will also hold financial stakes in the new Schmid Mawera Group. The other management positions will be filled by existing executives from both companies. This will ensure continuity and industry-specific experience and optimally combine the strengths of both companies.

The two main locations in Eschlikon and Hard will continue to play a central role in the new Schmid Mawera Group. This also applies to the existing subsidiaries and branches of both companies.

The production site in Poland, which belongs to Schmid AG, energy solutions, will be responsible for manufacturing the entire product portfolio of the new Schmid Mawera Group in the future and will be further expanded.

The Schmid Mawera Group also includes the stake in IS SaveEnergy AG previously held by Schmid AG energy solutions. This will continue to operate as an independent company within the Schmid Mawera Group. In combination with APF Advanced Particle Filters GmbH, an existing investment by entrepreneurs Wolfgang Rohner, Stefan Gritsch, and Günther Lehner in the field of exhaust gas treatment, additional synergies can be realized.

Leveraging strategic advantages for growth

The merger is being carried out from a position of strength. Schmid AG energy solutions is well positioned both operationally and strategically and is one of Europe’s leading suppliers of biomass plants, particularly in the industrial sector. The aim of the new Schmid Mawera Group is to further expand its market presence, consistently drive forward its development as a system integrator for renewable energies, and also expand its industrial heat pump business in the future.

For the Schmid family, the focus of this decision was on securing the long-term future of the company and finding a stable succession solution. With the entrepreneurs from Vorarlberg, Schmid AG energy solutions is gaining a strategic partner that shares the same values.

The Schmid family will withdraw from the company’s operations in spring 2026. At the same time, they will remain closely connected to the company, its employees, and the region.

The merger to form the Schmid Mawera Group marks the beginning of a new chapter with clear prospects for the future, strong regional roots, and a leading position in the European market for sustainable energy solutions.

“We would like to express our sincere and heartfelt thanks to the entire Schmid team, as well as our customers and business partners, for their great commitment and the time we have spent together, and we wish them all the best for the future.”
